A Primary Bathroom Remodel With a Tub and a Walk-In Shower

In this Orange County primary bathroom remodel, we added a 62-inch bathtub and a separate corner walk-in shower to a compact room that had only a shower. To make it fit, we moved the drains and water lines, added a smart toilet and a double vanity, and put a real door on the entry.

What the Homeowner Wanted

The homeowner wanted a bathtub without giving up the shower. They also wanted more storage, a better flow through the room, and an updated look.

The Bathroom Before: A Shower but No Tub

When you walked in, the shower was on the right, the vanity sat in the middle, and the toilet was enclosed on the left. There was no tub. The entry was a wide opening with no door, so the room had no real privacy.

How We Fit a Tub and a Shower

Moving the plumbing first

A new layout meant new plumbing. We rerouted the toilet drain, moved the shower drain, added a drain for the tub, and rerouted the water lines for the tub, shower, and sinks. We also adjusted the toilet vent and installed a new Whisper fan for better ventilation.

A 62-inch tub and a corner walk-in shower

We installed a 62-inch bathtub with a deck-mounted filler and built a roomy walk-in shower in the corner. Placing the shower there freed space for a smart toilet right beside it.

A double vanity with an outlet in the drawer

The new vanity has two sinks and a quartz countertop. We also put a power outlet inside a drawer, so the hair dryer and electric toothbrush stay plugged in and off the counter.

A door at the entry

We narrowed the oversized opening and installed a proper door, which gives the room privacy and makes the layout feel finished.

Tile and Finishes

Large porcelain tiles cover the shower walls and the tub's pony wall, so you have fewer grout lines to clean. The floor is 24 by 24 porcelain tile, durable and easy to maintain, in the same material family as the walls.

The Finished Bathroom

The homeowner now chooses between a bath and a shower every day, without adding a single square foot. The double vanity gives each person a sink, the smart toilet and new fan make the room more comfortable, and the door finally closes it off from the bedroom.
