How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take in Orange County?

Bathroom remodels can vary in complexity, but having a clear timeline helps homeowners plan their project with confidence.

Most bathroom remodels we build in Orange County take about 4 to 7 weeks of construction, from demolition to the final walkthrough. Design, selections, permits, and product orders come before that, while you can still use the room. The biggest factors are whether the shower, tub, or toilet moves, and how much tile work the design calls for.

This guide from Cabinet, Flooring & Bath Design explains each phase, how long it usually takes, and how to keep your bathroom remodel on schedule.

Bathroom Remodel Timelines by Scope

Refresh in the same layout

A new vanity, countertop, fixtures, lighting, and flooring, with plumbing staying where it is. These projects sit at the shorter end of the range because there is less plumbing work and fewer inspections.

Full remodel in the same footprint

Everything comes out down to the studs, including a new tile shower or tub surround with waterproofing. Tile work and drying time make up a large share of the schedule.

Layout change

Moving the shower, converting a tub to a walk-in shower, fitting both a tub and a shower, or relocating the toilet. More plumbing, more inspections, and more custom work put these projects at the longer end of the range, and sometimes beyond it.

Our bathroom remodeling page explains these options in more detail.

Before Construction: Planning and Ordering

Discovery call and home measure

We talk through the room, your goals, and a working budget, then visit to measure and note plumbing, ventilation, electrical, and access.

Design and selections: about 1 to 2 weeks

Choosing tile, the vanity, countertop, fixtures, glass, and lighting takes time, especially in a bathroom where many small items have to work together. You can compare them side by side at our Tustin or Rancho Santa Margarita showroom. The result is one written proposal with the scope, selections, and price.

Orders, permits, and HOA review

Vanities, special-order tile, and shower glass each have their own lead time, so we schedule demolition around the materials, not before them. If the work needs a permit, we prepare the documents and coordinate permits and inspections for the work we contract, and we confirm any HOA requirements before design approval. Our guide to remodeling permits in Orange County explains what usually needs one.

Construction Phase by Phase

1. Demolition: about 2 to 4 days

The old tub or shower, vanity, toilet, tile, and flooring come out. We protect the rest of the house and check the subfloor and walls for water damage.

2. Plumbing and electrical: about 3 to 7 days

Drains and supply lines are set for the new layout, along with valves, lighting, outlets, and ventilation. If the work requires inspection, it happens before walls are closed.

3. Shower construction and tile: about 1 to 3 weeks

This is usually the longest phase. It includes building the shower pan, waterproofing, setting the tile, and allowing proper drying time between steps. Large-format tile, niches, benches, and detailed patterns take longer to install well.

4. Vanity and fixture installation: about 3 to 5 days

The vanity, countertop, sink, faucet, toilet, and accessories go in. Shower glass is often measured after the tile is finished, then made and installed.

5. Final touches and walkthrough: about 2 to 4 days

Paint, mirrors, hardware, adjustments, and cleanup. We walk through the bathroom with you against the approved scope.

The phases add up to less than the full 4-to-7-week range because there is waiting time between them: inspections, drying time for waterproofing and grout, and glass fabrication after tile.

What Affects How Long a Bathroom Remodel Takes?

  • Plumbing changes. Moving a drain or converting a tub to a shower adds work and often an inspection.
  • Tile complexity. Large-format tile, patterns, niches, and floor-to-ceiling tile take longer.
  • Custom materials. Custom vanities, special-order tile, and frameless glass have longer lead times.
  • Inspections. Scheduling depends on the city.
  • Hidden conditions. Water damage under an old shower or tub is common in bathrooms. When we find it, we show you, explain the options, and update the schedule.

How to Avoid Delays

  • Choose every material before demolition, including tile, grout color, fixtures, and glass style.
  • Avoid design changes mid-project. A change to the tile or the valve location after work starts can mean new orders and lost days.
  • Plan for the bathroom being out of service. If it is your only full bath, plan for showers elsewhere during construction.
  • Ask the right questions up front. Our list of questions to ask before a remodel helps you compare contractors and schedules.
  • Work with one coordinated team. A project manager who schedules the trades keeps the hand-offs between plumbing, tile, and glass tight.

Time and Cost Go Together

Many of our bathroom remodels fall between $15,000 and $45,000+. Moving the shower or toilet, tile size, and custom vanities drive both the cost and the timeline. Our article on bathroom remodel costs in Orange County breaks this down. Financing options are also available.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bathroom remodel take in Orange County?

Most bathrooms take about 4 to 7 weeks of construction, from demolition to final walkthrough. Planning, selections, permits, and orders come before that.

What is the longest part of a bathroom remodel?

Usually the shower: building the pan, waterproofing, tiling, and drying time can take 1 to 3 weeks on their own.

Does converting a tub to a walk-in shower take longer?

Usually yes, because the drain and valve often move and the shower is built from scratch with new waterproofing and tile.

Can you remodel two bathrooms at the same time?

Often yes, if you have another bathroom to use during construction. We can plan the schedule either way during the proposal.
